What happens when nature slowly reclaims a space?
During a residency at Pada Studios in 2022, Kimi spent time working within a former industrial estate that had gradually become intertwined with the natural world. The residency encouraged artists to respond to the site's history, architecture and surrounding environment. For Kimi, it sparked a question that would become the foundation of this exhibition: what happens when nature slowly reclaims a space?
Through storytelling, woodcarving, textiles and found objects, she began imagining an alternative history for the site. Rather than a place of industry, she reimagined the estate as a factory devoted entirely to the production of crayons, creating the fictional character Bud - a factory worker whose quiet love of flowers, insects and birds becomes a meditation on labour, routine and our relationship with the natural world.
First developed during the residency and later exhibited at PLANQUE, Bud has continued to evolve. The works in this exhibition expand his story, exploring both the physical transformation of the abandoned factory and Bud's own emotional journey as nature slowly reclaims the landscape around him.
